Lie Assessment
Different grass = different launch, spin & strike demands.
The Concept
Lies dictate shot selection more than distance. Fluffy rough adds unpredictability. Tight lies punish excess wrist. Buried lies reduce spin completely—accept rollout.
Early identification sets correct expectations—avoid forcing a spinny miracle.
Common Lie Types
- Tight short turf: Favor chip technique; ball first precision
- Fluffy rough: Use more loft; steeper entry; expect less spin
- Buried (nestled): Square face, hack it out—rollout inevitable
- Wet patch: Expect skid then check—land shorter
The Drill
Lie Library Session
On practice area: Place 4 balls in each lie type (tight, fluffy, semi, downhill). Before hitting, verbally state: technique + expected rollout.
Hit: Execute without manipulating mid-swing.
Goal: Reduce surprises. Improve predictive accuracy of finish.
Track in ClearCut
- Better leave distances (fewer short-side attempts)
- Short Game SG rises through reduced failed spin tries
- Decision speed improves—less overthinking address
TL;DR
Read the lie, pick realistic shot, manage rollout. Stop forcing hero spin.
