Mat's Tips

Distance vs Accuracy

When to bomb it and when to dial it back

The Concept

Distance usually wins. Data shows that longer hitters gain strokes even when they miss more fairways. Why? Shorter approach shots are dramatically easier — a wedge from the rough beats a 7-iron from the fairway.

The exception: when penalties are in play. Trees, water, OB — these erase the distance advantage fast.

The Drill

3-3-3 Strategy Test

Next round, identify 3 holes where you can bomb it safely. Hit driver aggressively and note your approach proximity.

Then pick 3 narrow holes where accuracy matters. Hit 3-wood or hybrid for position and compare your approach results.

Track it: Record tee shots in ClearCut with Fairway/Left/Right and approach proximity. Compare your SG:Driving on aggressive vs conservative holes.

TL;DR

Distance beats accuracy unless penalties lurk. Choose your weapon based on what the hole defends.
