Optimal Tee Height
Small adjustment, big difference in launch and distance
The Concept
Tee height controls launch angle and spin. Modern drivers are built to launch higher with less spin — that's the distance formula. Tee it high to catch the ball on the upswing, maximizing carry without ballooning.
Rule of thumb: Half the ball should sit above the crown at address. Adjust from there based on your swing.
Why it matters
- Launch angle — Higher tee = higher launch = more carry distance
- Spin rate — Upward attack angle reduces backspin for optimal flight
- Center contact — Proper height helps you catch the sweet spot
- Confidence — Seeing the ball set up right builds trust in your swing
Finding your height
- Standard (modern driver): Half ball above crown — promotes ascending strike
- Lower tee: More control, penetrating flight, into-wind conditions
- Higher tee: Max distance, help getting ball airborne, downwind boost
- Steep swing: Tee it lower to avoid pop-ups and excessive spin
The Drill
Tee Height Test (Range Session)
Setup: Hit 5 drives at three different heights:
- Low: Top of ball even with crown
- Standard: Half ball above crown
- High: Entire ball above crown
Measure: Note which height gives you the best combination of distance and consistency. Look for solid contact, not maximum effort.
Result: Stick with the height that produces your best 3 out of 5 shots, not the one perfect bomb.
Track in ClearCut
Once you've dialed in your tee height, consistency improves. Track your driving stats to confirm:
- Fairways hit should stay steady or improve
- Estimated distance should increase slightly
- Approach proximity gets better (from shorter clubs in)
TL;DR
Tee it high for modern drivers — half ball above the crown is a great starting point. Test to find your optimal height.
