Smart Club Selection
Take more club, swing smoother—remove front-short misses.
The Concept
Most approach shots finish short. Adrenaline, imperfect strike, uphill green—lots conspires against full yardage. Choosing one extra club and making a controlled swing tightens distance dispersion and increases GIR.
Under‑club = short-siding, long‑club smooth = pin-high or safe past. Past the hole is rarely worse than a short bunker or false front.
Why More Club Helps
- Encourages relaxed tempo for center strike
- Reduces spin loft fluctuation
- Shifts miss pattern from front fringe to middle green
- Simplifies wind and uphill adjustments—add half a club instead of forcing
The Drill
+1 Club Nine
On a practice round: For 9 consecutive approach shots (outside 80 yds) choose one club longer than normal.
- Swing at ~85% effort
- Hold balanced finish
- Note carry vs target
Record: How many finished pin-high or slightly past vs your typical pattern.
Track in ClearCut
- Approach proximity should tighten
- Fewer short misses improves SG:Approach
- More GIR leads to easier first putt distances
TL;DR
Club up, swing smooth—own the center of the green and let putts gain strokes.
