Target Selection
Aim smart—center & fat sides produce better scoring patterns.
The Concept
Pins tempt greed. But most strokes are lost from short-siding or missing on the wrong tier. Center or quadrant aiming boosts GIR and average first putt length.
Treat each green as zones: safe, caution, avoid. Pick the highest scoring zone—not the flag unless conditions justify.
Zone Framework
- Safe: Middle / largest plateau
- Caution: Edge shelves with bailout room
- Avoid: Over bunkers to tight pins / heavy slope runoff
- Wind: Favor upwind half—curves reduce lateral error
The Drill
12 Approach Zone Round
Pick 12 approaches: Before swinging, verbally declare your zone (e.g., "Front-middle plateau"). Ignore the pin if outside that zone.
After shot: Mark success if ball finished inside intended zone (even if not close to pin).
Result: Compare zone success vs GIR and first putt distance to a previous round chasing flags.
Track in ClearCut
- Improved proximity from safer zones
- SG:Approach stabilizes—fewer disastrous short-sides
- First putt distances tighten around consistent ranges
TL;DR
Aim for zones not flags. Smart targets lower volatility and raise scoring floor.
