Chip vs Pitch
Default to lower, simpler chips—reserve the lofted pitch.
The Concept
Simpler trajectories produce tighter dispersions. A chip (ball back, slight shaft lean) rolls like a putt after landing. A pitch (open face, shallow path) demands precise contact.
Rule: If you can keep it low & running without crossing severe slope or hazard—chip it.
Choose Chip When
- Plenty of green between you and hole
- Uphill or flat surface
- Firm or predictable turf
- Need consistent rollout distance
Choose Pitch When
- Carry needed over rough / bunker / tier
- Short-sided pin with little green
- Downhill landing reducing friction
- Must stop quickly from tight lie
The Drill
Chip/Pitch Decision Grid
On practice green: Set 4 balls each at three lie scenarios (tight, fluffy, downhill). For each, verbally call "chip" or "pitch" then execute.
Track: Average proximity for chips vs pitches. Adjust selection rules next session.
Goal: Lower shot type variance—choose correctly more often.
Track in ClearCut
- Better leave distances → easier first putts
- Short Game SG improves through reduced chunk/thin outcomes
- Consistent decision pattern lowers cognitive load
TL;DR
When in doubt, chip. Pitch only when surface or obstacle forces height.
